Happy Sinter Klaus Day...

to all of my dutch brothers and sisters! This has been a family tradition as far back as I can remember. Being that my grandparents immigrated to the United States back in 1950, we still have a lot of strong ties to the culture in Holland as well as many of their traditions. Every year St. Nicholas and his "helper" Zwarte Piet travel from their home in Spain across Europe helping the poor and bringing food to the children. In our home we would wake up on December 5th to a special treat in our wooden shoes. That tradition has now been passed on to my generation.
So here's to Sinter Klaus days of the past. The last party we got to celebrate with my family (3 years ago... wow)!

Was that guy painted black supposed to be Ruprecht? I remember in German class learning about Ruprecht, the guy who would beat the naughty children with a rod who didn't get any presents. : O He looked like the Grim Reaper.

The wooden shoes look like so much fun!
